The IR LED should be connected to PB1 pin of the ATTami.
In my ATTiny virtual wall for Roomba I'm using timer 1 to produce the 38KHz
IR modulation. The timer output is directed to the PB1 pin.
Attached here is the schematic of the virtual wall. Later on I'll put the
entire design to the wiki.

1. 950 nm infrared LED COM-09349 from Sparkfun (or equivalent).
2. IR receiver diode TSOP38238 from sparkfun (or equivalent).
Each of them is connected directly to one of the I/O lines of the ATTami.
Since two lines are used by the USB and one line is dedicated for the reset
that lives as with only one free I/O line.
We can use that line to sense a small amount of keys using your idea (A/D

I added few components:
1. red LED to indicate transmission.
2. green LED to indicate reception
3. 4th button
I deleted the two mounting holes. we only need them on the mother ship
I rearranged the components placement so that when you hold the board and
use your thumbs to push the buttons the transmitting IR LED will look
forward.
The location of the resistors is arbitrary, it is done just to show there
is enough room for everything.
