Discussion:
Recommendations for cordless screwdriver

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a cordless screwdriver. No defined budget and I don't
mind if it is expensive, but of course it would be great if it isn't :).

Requirements:
1. Quality
2. Value/Money
3. Long Lasting (i.e. the product, not the screwing). I guess that probably
means replaceable generic batteries?
4. Would like to be able to drill holes as well. Preferably in concrete
too, but this is less important, as I can leave concrete drilling to my
trusty 100 Shekel corded drill that has served me for many years.

Forgive me if some of these combined don't make sense (e.g. drilling) -
I've never owned such a tool.

Also where to buy?

Thanks,
Kosta

I swear by the makita 10.8V li-ion drill / driver. I have it for about 4
years now and it's one of the best tools I own (those who know me and saw
my lab know that IS saying something... :-)
the model I have is DF330D. they have a slightly improved model now that
also has a hammer-drill mode (mine doesn't). I never tried the hammer-drill
version and wouldn't expect it to go through concrete easily, but it is
probably usable for light duty wall-drilling.

link to the current model in zap:
http://www.zap.co.il/model.aspx?modelid=838323

generally, I recommend on 10.8V li-ion drill / drivers for almost everyone.
in my experience, a higher voltage (and thus power) is not important unless
you work with it for hours at a time and/or on very demanding jobs. the
main advantage of the 10.8V line is a low weight which greatly increases
user comfort compared to 12V (not to mention 18V). if you have something
against Makita (why would anyone?), the more-or-less only real alternative
in Israel is Bosch. they make good 10.8V drill-drivers too, I heard from
reputable sources...

pros of the makita IMO:
- great ergonomics, including low weight as I mentioned above.
- clutch for controlling torque. that's important for screwdriving so as
not to destroy more sensitive screw heads.
- led light aimed towards the work (important!)
- plenty of power for general use: easily drilling wood and light metals
(and even steel with a bit more determination and decent drill bits).
- besides the variable speed you get by varying the pressure on the
trigger, there's another switch for low/high speed (it changes gears
internally). this is important because a single-speed drill / driver design
will have to compromise either on low-speed torque (i.e. for difficult
screws) or max speed (for effective drilling). with two gear settings you
get both - generally you use the low setting for screw-driving and the high
setting for most drilling jobs.

regarding batteries / the 'long lasting' aspect - the market in the last 10
years or so has become such that there are compatible batteries available
at low cost for every major brand of tool, on eBay and other places.
sometimes they are even of a little higher capacity than the original ones.
I got a spare for mine a while ago and it works well, and didn't cost much.

as for where to buy - Dror tools, Florentin street, Tel-Aviv. Don't rely on
their zap / website prices, either phone or go there and ask for their best
price for a specific tool model. otherwise, on check on zap for best price.
notice some sell it without battery and charger (if you have them from
other tools of the same line), but you probably need the full version.

good luck!

notice in the zap link, there are two clusters of prices. the first (around
400 NIS) is for body only, no battery or charger. the second, around 740
NIS, includes two batteries and a charger, and sometimes a bonus such as a
radio that works on the same batteries (depends on the seller).
