KiCad as Eagle replacement

I’ve recently been trying to entertain myself in learning basic PCB design stuff.
Any thoughts on KiCad [1] as proper open-source software, as opposed to Eagle or other proprietary solutions?

i know people use it, simon designed the mchck <goog_1351705925>.org with
it.
on windows its never worked well for me (windows tearing etc.)
but on arch its working great, all these PCB editors have their own
workflow.
its just a matter of picking an initial simple design and working on it
(attami, nudge nudge)

It's also one of my goals.
I've actively worked on the Eagle to KiCad converter sending a pull request
(that just got ignored for the past 3 months..)

I used it to convert ATTami (old version) to circuitbee, which accepted
KiCad as an input.

Unfortunately, I tend to aim in all direction and spend too little effort
in each of my projects :-(
